I did expect that playing at home would increase the probability of the home team winning. However I wanted to quantify this. What I found was:

Playing at home means a team is 14% more likely to win and 16% less likely to lose on average

Playing at home does not have a statistically significant effect on how often a team draws

Playing at home equates to about 0.2 extra goals per game

Experience is directly correlated with more wins and fewer losses

To get an idea of what the best countries are and how that has changed over time, I decided to create an ELO rating system using the dataset.
The picture below is a map made in tableau showing each countries rankings.

Also to accompany this I turned the ELO ranking into an animations showing history of the top 10 countries from 1977-2019. Which can be viewed here: Video
