Women's International Football

I did expect that playing at home would increase the probability of the home team winning. However I wanted to quantify this. What I found was:

  • Playing at home means a team is 14% more likely to win and 16% less likely to lose on average

  • Playing at home does not have a statistically significant effect on how often a team draws

  • Playing at home equates to about 0.2 extra goals per game

  • Experience is directly correlated with more wins and fewer losses

To get an idea of what the best countries are and how that has changed over time, I decided to create an ELO rating system using the dataset.

The picture below is a map made in tableau showing each countries rankings.

Also to accompany this I turned the ELO ranking into an animations showing history of the top 10 countries from 1977-2019. Which can be viewed here: Video
